We are finishing up our first week of seed drying in Hart MI. Barb and I have maintained our sanity while keeping the fires going (literally) around the clock, by ourselves. This week end our co-workers are due to arrive from Oregon. They left on Thursday afternoon, and will be here hopefully by Sunday sometime; as it looks like the Cannery (Arbre Farms) is going to run on Monday.
We made 12 trips to Arbre Farms, and picked up 26 thousand pounds of wet seed which produced 6 bags of dried seeds which will weigh just short of 12 thousand pounds. Round trip to the farm is 45 miles, and we pick up at noon, 6 PM and Midnight. Thursday night they didn’t get the line cleared till 1 PM, but last night they were finished when I arrived at a quarter to midnight.
On the Monday morning run, Barb is able to ride out with me, but then the rest of the week, if the fires are burning, she needs to stay and make sure the place doesn’t burn down.
We are already a third of the way to filling our first container of seeds for the trip back to Oregon. Tuesday morning, the farm had a breakdown, so we got to sleep in and managed a trip to Pentwater for breakfast and to do a little shopping at a RV store there to pick up some needed hose connections. The rest of the week was just putting up with the high temperature and humidity.
